Sleeping Beneath the Stars in Almaguin: A Whimsical Romantic Getaway to Deer Lake Wilderness Retreat

If you're craving a romantic escape where starlight dances through treetops and fireflies guide your way through forest paths, let me introduce you to the magic of the Almaguin Highlands — a place where time slows down and the charm of small-town life meets the beauty of wilderness wonder.

My partner and I recently traded our screens and schedules for something a little more enchanting: a night away at Deer Lake Wilderness Retreat, tucked just outside of South River. Our final destination? A Stargazer Geodome nestled in the woods, completely off-grid but full of comfort, charm, and cozy vibes. But before we got to our whimsical hideaway, the journey through the heart of Almaguin was just as delightful.

A Road Trip Made for Two

Like any good road trip, ours began with snacks — because nothing says romance like a well-stocked cooler. We stopped at Foodland in Sundridge, grabbing kabobs, fresh salads, and a few treats to fill our cooler for the night ahead.

Lunchtime found us parked in front of the Double Decker, a nostalgic little eatery with local charm. I devoured a crispy chicken burger while my partner dived into a classic, cheesy poutine — the kind of indulgent lunch that says, "We’re on vacation, calories don’t count."

To refresh and toast to our weekend of starry skies and solitude, we popped by Copperhead Distillery. Walking in felt like taking a step back in time to the days of the moonshiners and rum runners. We grabbed a few cans of something chilled to pair with dinner later and continued on our way.

Then came one of the most delightful stops: Crystal Cave. It’s more than a shop — it's a fairytale brought to life, with enchanting displays, whimsical corners, and crystals that seem to glow with personality. We wandered, touched, admired, and left with a few little treasures to keep the magic going.

Before heading off the beaten path, we couldn’t resist one last sweet treat at South River Scoops N More. I opted for a tart frozen yogurt while my partner, ever loyal to tradition, went for a scoop of Kawartha Dairy ice cream. With sticky fingers and happy hearts, we continued our journey, winding past Eagle Lake Narrows and into the woods.

Stargazing in Style

Deer Lake Wilderness Retreat welcomed us with peace and pine-scented air. After a short two-minute stroll from the parking lot through a leafy forest path, we arrived at our Stargazer Geodome. Imagine a charming bubble of comfort in the wild — soft fairy lights, candles, rustic kitchenette, cozy chairs, and a king-sized bed you wouldn’t want to get out of.

Outside, our private deck awaited with a BBQ, picnic table, fire pit, and the kind of silence that soothes your soul. As the late afternoon sun filtered through the trees, we got to work on dinner. We fired up the BBQ and grilled our kabobs to perfection, pairing them with the crisp salad we picked up earlier and a cold drink from our Copperhead stash. Dining outdoors, surrounded by nature with nothing but the sound of the wind in the trees and birdsong in the distance, felt like we’d stepped into our own private world.

As dusk began to settle over the retreat, we lit a campfire and curled up together, reading by the last bits of golden light before watching the flames dance into the night. The stars slowly appeared above us — first a few, then dozens, then hundreds. With no light pollution to interfere, the night sky stretched endlessly above, and we couldn’t stop staring up in awe.

Later, we followed the softly lit trail down to the barn, the communal space at Deer Lake Wilderness Retreat where guests can cook, shower, and unwind. The path itself was straight out of a storybook — mason jars filled with fairy lights led the way, and fireflies flickered in the tall grass around us like nature’s confetti. The barn was rustic yet clean and inviting, offering a place to freshen up before settling in for the night.

Back at the dome, we slipped between the softest sheets, turned off the lights, and laid back to admire the view. Above us, through the geodome's skylight, a blanket of stars shimmered like a private show from the universe. We watched the constellations slowly shift until our eyelids grew heavy. With the overhead fan quietly spinning and the forest whispering goodnight, we drifted off to sleep wrapped in the kind of peace you can only find far from the noise of everyday life.

Morning Magic

Morning light gently streamed through the dome. We packed up our things and headed back towards the parking lot. As we drove down the road towards town, a deer bounded through the misty field beside us — as if to send us off with one last dose of woodland wonder.

Our final stop before heading home was Sips in Sundridge, where we grabbed a toffee crunch chai latte and a BLT sandwich for breakfast. Sitting by the window with warm mugs in hand, we recapped the adventure, already dreaming about our return.
