Ride Together, Thrive Together: Carpooling in Almaguin.

August 1st, 2025 by Megan Yemm

If you’ve been lucky enough to spend any time on the scenic winding roads that carve through the pine forests of the Almaguin Highlands, it’s certain you’ve noticed a “Carpool Almaguin” sign. If you are from the area, you may also be aware that public transportation options are scarce. Whether it's commuting to work, attending medical appointments or running errands like grocery shopping, driving is often the only option. That’s why carpooling is a smart, practical solution - and it’s something more people in the region can benefit from.

In 2021, ACED, alongside supporting municipalities, revived a 2009 project originally headed by the Women’s Own Resource Centre (supported by FedNor and participating municipalities). The program was used to address the region’s public transportation challenges, while also helping individuals save money and reduce pollution. Economic and Earth friendly? Sign me up!

The revival aptly named; Carpool Almaguin, paired with the user-friendly app Poparide, gives Carpool Almaguin a no fuss modern approach to ride sharing. Simply download the app, find or share a ride, meet up at a convenient Carpool Almaguin lot, turn up the tunes and hit the road!

Carpool Almaguin locations, recognizable by the branded Carpool Almaguin signage, are conveniently situated across the region, providing a space to meet up and/or leave your car parked while carpooling. All sites are easily accessible, well-lit, safe meet-up points that are winter maintained.

So why choose carpooling? For some it is necessary to get from point A to B. Maybe you don’t own a vehicle, or have a valid driver’s license, maybe financial or physical limitations play a part. Or maybe you are looking at reducing the cost of your daily commute or minimizing your carbon footprint. Regardless of the reason, carpooling is a convenient option. Sharing a ride with one or more people can reduce the cost of gas and parking fees and can help you save on trip expenses by at least 50%! Carpooling is also a great way to make a new friend, and we all know a little emotional support on those wintery Almaguin drives can help!

So next time you are headed out on the road keep an eye out for a Carpool Almaguin site and think about how carpooling could benefit you and someone else in our community!
